<p><br />I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.<br />Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation（解放） Proclamation. This momentous decree（法令） came as a great beacon（灯塔） light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.<br />But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled （残废的）by the manacles （手铐, 脚镣, 束缚）of segregation （种族隔离）and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.<br />In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note（本票,期票） to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the &quot;unalienable （不能剥夺的）Rights&quot; of &quot;Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.&quot; It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar（在...的范围） as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked &quot;insufficient funds.&quot;<br />But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults（拱顶） of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.<br />We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand（.流沙, 危险而捉摸不定的事物） of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.<br />It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering（酷热的） summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.<br />But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold （门槛）which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.<br />The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably（解不开地） bound to our freedom. <br />We cannot walk alone.<br />And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.<br />We cannot turn back.<br />There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, &quot;When will you be satisfied?&quot; We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality（残忍, 野蛮的行为）. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until &quot;justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.&quot;<br />I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations（ 苦难）. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. And some of you have come from areas where your quest -- quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution（迫害）and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive（赎回的）. Go back to Mississippi（.密西西比河）, go back to Alabama（阿拉巴马州）, go back to South Carolina（南卡罗莱纳州, (美国)）, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos （犹太人区）of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. <br />Let us not wallow（.沉溺于） in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.<br />And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.<br />I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: &quot;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.&quot;<br />I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.<br />I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis（ (沙漠中)绿洲,舒适的地方） of freedom and justice.<br />I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. <br />I have a dream today!<br />I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of &quot;interposition&quot; and &quot;nullification（无效, 废弃）&quot; -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.<br />I have a dream today!<br />I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; &quot;and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.&quot;? <br />This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.<br />With this faith, we will be able to hew （砍）out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling（刺耳的） discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.<br />And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:<br />My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's（圣地朝拜者的）pride. From every mountainside, let freedom ring! And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance（毅力） more often, and never give up a thing because it was or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. &ldquo;There are only two creatures,&rdquo; says a proverb, &ldquo;who can surmount （登上，战胜）the pyramids&mdash;the eagle and the snail.&rdquo;</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we began early enough. I often hear grown up people say &ldquo;I could not fix my attention on the sermon (说教)or book, although I wished to do so&rdquo; , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 假如我又回到了童年，我做事要更有毅力，决不因为事情艰难或者麻烦而撒手不干，我们要光明，就得征服黑暗。毅力在效果上有时能同天才相比。俗话说：&ldquo;能登上金字塔的生物，只有两种&mdash;&mdash;鹰和蜗牛。&rdquo;<br />&nbsp; 假如我又回到了童年，我就要养成专心致志的习惯；有事在手，就决不让任何东西让我分心。我要牢记：优秀的滑冰手从不试图同时滑向两个不同的方向。<br />&nbsp; 如果及早养成这种专心致志的习惯，它将成为我们生命的一部分。我常听成年人说：&ldquo;虽然我希望能集中注意听牧师讲道或读书，但往往做不到。&rdquo;而原因就是年轻时没有养成这种习惯。<br />假如我现在能重新开始我的生命，我就要更注意记忆力的培养。我要采取一切可能的办法，并且在一切可能的场合，增强记忆力。要正确无误地记住一些东西，在开始阶段的确要作出一番小小的努力；但要不了多久，记忆力本身就会起作用，使记忆成为轻而易举的事，只需及早培养，记忆自会成为一种才能。</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; If I were a boy again, I would cultivate courage. &ldquo;Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless as cowardice.(怯懦, 胆小)&rdquo; says a wise author. We too often borrow trouble, and anticipate that may never appear.&rdquo; The fear of ill exceeds the ill we fear.&rdquo; Dangers will arise in any career, but presence of mind will often conquer the worst of them. Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be feared.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smiles back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return. Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. &ldquo;Who shuts love out , in turn shall be shut out from love.&rdquo; importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;If I were a boy again, I would school myself to say no more often. I might write pages on the doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy.<br />&nbsp;If I were a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy(礼貌) towards my companions and friends, and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, I would, if I were a boy again, I would still try harder to make others happy.</p>

<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twenty-four hours, but always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed(命定的) man chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Such stories set up thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances .What associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings? What happiness should we find in reviewing the past, what regrets?</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with a gentleness , a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama(全景) of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the epicurean(享乐主义的) motto of &ldquo;Eat, drink, and be merry,&rdquo; most people would be chastened (使顺从)by the certainty of impending death.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 我们都读过这样一些动人的故事，故事里主人公将不久于人世。长则一年，短则２４小时。但是我们总是很想知道这个即将离开人世的人是决定怎样度过他最后的日子的。当然， 我所指的是有权作出选择的自由人，不是那些活动范围受到严格限制的死囚。<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 这一类故事会使我们思考在类似的处境下，我们自己该做些什么？在那临终前的几个小时里我们会产生哪些联想？会有多少欣慰和遗憾呢？<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 有时我想，把每天都当作生命的最后一天来度过也不失为一个很好的生命法则。这种人生态度使人非常重视人生的价值。每一天我们都应该以和善的态度、充沛的精力和热情的欣赏来度过，而这些恰恰是在来日方长时往往被我们忽视的东西。当然，有这样一些人奉行享乐主义的座右铭&mdash;&mdash;吃喝玩乐，但是大多数人却不能摆脱死亡来临的恐惧。<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Most of us take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future, when we are in buoyant(轻快的) health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty task, hardly aware of our listless attitude towards life.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; The same lethargy(无生气), I am afraid, characterizes the use of our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold(.多种形式的) blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life . But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sound hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we conscious of health until we are ill.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. &ldquo;Nothing in particular,&rdquo; she replied. I might have been incredulous had I not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 我们大多数人认为生命理所当然，我们明白总有一天我们会死去，但是我们常常把这一天看得非常遥远。当我们身体强壮时，死亡便成了难以相象的事情了。我们很少会考虑它， 日子一天天过去，好像没有尽头。所以我们为琐事奔波，并没有意识到我们对待生活的态度是冷漠的。<br />我想我们在运用我们所有五官时恐怕也同样是冷漠的。只有聋子才珍惜听力，只有盲人才能认识到能见光明的幸运。对于那些成年致盲或失陪的人来说尤其如此。但是那些听力或视力从未遭受损失的人却很少充分利用这些幸运的能力，他们对所见所闻不关注、不欣赏。这与常说的不失去不懂得珍贵，不生病不知道健康可贵的道理是一样的。<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 我常想如果每一个人在他成年的早些时候，有几天成为了聋子或瞎子也不失为一件幸事。黑暗将使他更珍惜光明；沉寂将教他知道声音的乐趣。<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 有时我会试探我的非盲的朋友们，想知道他们看见了什么。最近我的一位非常要好的朋友来看我，她刚刚在树林里走了很长时间，我问她看见了什么。&ldquo;没什么特别的，&rdquo;她回答说。<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 如不是我早已习惯了这样的回答，我也许不会轻易相信，因为很久以前我就相信了有眼人看不见什么。</p>
<p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch(白桦树), or the rough shaggy(表面粗糙的) bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter&rsquo;s sleep I feel the delightful, velvety(象天鹅绒的, 柔软的) texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions(回旋, 卷绕); and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a brook(小溪) rush through my open fingers. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug(地毯). To me the pageant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The panorama of color and action fill the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light and the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather that as a means of adding fullness to life.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for three days!</p>

When you come to think about it, there are only four ways you can deal with rubbish: dump it, burn it, turn it into something you can use again, attempt to produce less of it. We keep trying all four methods, but he sheer volume of rubbish we produce worldwide threatens to overwhelm us.</font></p>

<p><br />&nbsp; Rubbish, however, is only part of the problem of polluting our planet. The need to produce ever-increasing quantities of cheap food leads to a different kind of pollution. Industrialized farming methods produce cheap meat products: beef, pork and chicken. The use of pesticides and fertilizers produces cheap grain and vegetables. The price we pay for cheap food may be already too high: Mad Cow Disease (BSE) in cattle, salmonella(沙门氏菌 ) in chicken and eggs, and listeria(&nbsp; 利斯特杆菌) in dairy products. And if you think you'll abandon meat and become a vegetarian, you have the choice of very expensive organically-grown vegetables or a steady diet of pesticides every time you think you're eating fresh salads and vegetables, or just having an innocent glass of water!</p>
<p><br />&nbsp; However, there is an even more insidious kind of pollution that particularly affects urban areas and invades our daily lives, and that is noise. Burglar alarms going off at any time of the day or night serve only to annoy passers-by and actually assist burglars to burgle. Car alarms constantly scream at us in the street and are a source of profound irritation. A recent survey of the effects of noise revealed (surprisingly?) that dogs barking incessantly in the night rated the highest form of noise pollution on a scale ranging from 1 to 7. The survey revealed a large number of sources of noise that we really dislike. Lawn mowers whining on a summer's day, late-night parties in apartment blocks, noisy neighbors, vehicles of al kinds, especially large container trucks thundering through quiet village, planes and helicopters flying overhead, large radios carried round in public places and played at maximum volume. New technology has also made its own contribution to noise. A lot of people object to mobile phones, especially when they are used in public places like restaurants or on public transport. Loud conversations on mobile phones invade our thoughts or interrupt the pleasure of meeting friends for a quiet chat. The noise pollution survey revealed a rather spurring and possibly amusing old fashioned source of noise. It turned out to be snoring! Men were found to be the worst offenders. It was revealed that 20% of men in their mid-thirties snore. This figure rises to a staggering 60% of men in their sixties. Against these figures, it was found that only 5% of women snore regularly, while the rest are constantly woken or kept awake by their trumpeting partners. Whatever the source of noise, one thing is certain: silence, it seems, has become a golden memory.</p>

Her name was Mrs. Thompson.And as she stood in front ofher 5th grade class on the very first day of school ,she told the children a lie . Like most teachers ,she looked her students and said that she loved them all the same .
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>But that was impossible because there in the front row ,slumped in his seat,was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn`t play well with the other children ,that his clothes were messy and that he constantly need a bath. And ,Teddy could be unpleasant.
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in making his papers with a broud red pen ,making bold Xs and then putting a &quot;F&quot; at the top of his papers.At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught,she was required to recieve each child`s past records and she put Teddy`s off until last.
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>However,when she recieved his file,she was in a surprise,Teddy`s first grade teacher wrote ,&quot;Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh.He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around.&quot;
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>His second grade teacher wrote,&quot;Teddy is an excellent student,well liked by his classmates ,but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle .&quot;
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>His third grade teacher wrote &quot;His mother`s death has been hard on him.He tried to do his best but his father doesn`t show much interest and his home life will steps aren`t taken.&quot;
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Teddy`s fourth grade teacher wrote,&quot;Teddy is withdrawn and doesn`t show much interest in school.He doesn`t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.&quot;
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>By now ,Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself.She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons,except for Teddy`s .His present was clumsily wrapped in the haevy,brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents.Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing ,and a bottle that was one-quaeter full of perfume.But she stifled the children`s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the brcelet was,putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist.Teddy stayed after school that day just long enough to say,&quot;Mrs. Thompson ,today you smelled just like my mom used to.&quot;

<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy.As she worked with him,his mind seemed to come alive.The more she encouraged him,the faster he responded.By the end of the year,Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Stoddard,MD.
<p>&nbsp;<font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>The story doesn`t end there.You see,there was yet another letter that spring.Teddy said he`d met his girl and was going to be married.He explained that his father jad died a couple of yearsago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit in the place at the wedding that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.Of course Mrs. Thompson did.

Just look at those apparently impressive constructions which proved to be fragile in an earthquake. True, social changes bred of ever faster flows of information and advances in technology are irresistible today, but they do not always translate into wealth or success overnight. Steady and sure progress will still be the mainstream in the future growth.
<p>&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US"><font face="Dutch766 BT"><font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Such solid progress is no contradiction with new developments in information and other technologies. The latest and fast changing technologies will help maintain and facilitate growth, yet our growth must be reliably down-to-earth to ensure sustainable success. Traditional values in our heritage that are proven viable should be retained and developed into &ldquo;new values&rdquo; needed for the future.
<p>&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US"><font face="Dutch766 BT"><font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Given the ever-changing technologies and fast-flowing information, we should do away with the slow changes, sluggish actions and time-consuming decision-making in the old days. Yet we must maintain a steady orientation for our growth. This is the new value we need.
<p>&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US"><font face="Dutch766 BT"><font size="3"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>We used to label various enterprises as large or small, traditional or high-tech, but that classification is no longer valid. If a company makes traditional products by high-tech means, then it is a high-tech enterprise. Traditional products do not disqualify the producer from high-tech. On the other hand, high-tech industries cannot grow without support from traditional products. In this light, one can see that there is no point in classifying the various enterprises so long as they all function towards prosperity and well-being in this land and better life for the people. In their progress, enterprises should move towards alliance---not only within the same industries, but also across industry borders---for better mutual support and cooperation.

<p>&nbsp; The New Year is a time for resolutions. Mentally, at least, most of us could compile formidable lists of 'dos' and 'don'ts'. The same old favorites recur year in year out with monotonous regularity. We resolve to get up earlier each morning, eat less, find more time to play with the children, do a thousand and one jobs about the house, be nice to people we don't' like, drive carefully, and take the dog for a walk every day. Past experience has taught us that certain accomplishments are beyond attainment. If we remain inveterate smokers, it is only because we have so often experienced the frustration that results from failure. Most of us fail in our efforts at self-improvement because our schemes are too ambitious and we never have time to carry them out. We also make the fundamental error of announcing our resolutions to everybody so that we look even more foolish when we slip back into our bad old ways. Aware of these pitfalls, this year I attempted to keep my resolutions to myself. I limited myself to two modest ambitions: to do physical exercise every morning and to read more of an evening. An all-night party on New Year's Eve provided me with a good excuse for not carrying out either of these new resolutions on the first day of the year, but on the second, I applied myself assiduously to the task.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; The daily exercises lasted only eleven minutes and I proposed to do them early in the morning before anyone had got up. The self-discipline required to drag myself out of bed eleven minutes earlier than usual was considerable. Nevertheless, I managed to creep down into the living room for two days before anyone found me out. After jumping about on the carpet and twisting the human frame into uncomfortable positions, I sat down at the breakfast table in an exhausted condition. It was this that betrayed me. The next morning the whole family trooped in to watch the performance. That was really unsettling, but I fended off the taunts and jibes of the family good-humouredly and soon everybody got used to the idea. However, my enthusiasm waned. The time I spent at exercises gradually diminished. Little by little the eleven minutes fell to zero. By January 10th, I was back to where I had started from. I argued that if I spent less time exhausting myself at exercises in the morning, I would keep my mind fresh for reading when I got home formwork Resisting the hypnotizing effect of television, I sat in my room for a few evenings with my eyes glued to book. One night, however, feeling cold and lonely, I went downstairs and sat in front of the television pretending to read. That proved to be my undoing, for I soon got back to my old bad habit of dozing off in front of the screen. I still haven't given up my resolution to do more reading. In fact, I have just bought a book entitled How to Read a Thousand Words a Minute. Perhaps it will solve my problem, but I just haven't had time to read it!</p>
